Brilliant Courage Under Fire gelding Turn It Up is being freshened for the big NZ four-year-old autumn features after taking out the Gr. 2 $52,800 McMillan Equine Feeds Waikato Flying Mile on Friday, January 11.
Turn It Up furthered his impeccable record for the Allstars stables of Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen.
This was his eighth win from only 10 starts for last month's Auckland Cup winner.
He's also been the runner-up in his other two starts, including a second to Cruz Bromac in the Gr. 1 NZ Free-For-All at Addington in November.
Turn It Up, from the ace barrier, was crossed into the first turn by the speedy Star Galleria, but at the business end, it was all Turn It Up as he powered along the sprint lane to win by three-quarters of a length.
He paced the 1609m in 1:54.5, the leaders running their last 800m in 56.1s and final 400m in a blazing 26.5s.
Turn It Up, who has already amassed $268,500 in earnings for owners Jim and Ann Gibbs, Lee Pilcher and Mark Purdon, will now target the $100,000 Taylor Mile at Auckland on April 26, $100,000 NZ Messenger Championship at Auckland on May 3.
His sire, Courage Under Fire, who died last winter, has frozen semen available from Bromac Lodge this term.
The son of In The Pocket was a brilliant two and three-year-old, going unbeaten for his first 24 starts, winning six Derbys’.
He has also been hugely successful at stud, leaving the 2016 Inter Dominion Pacing Grand Final winner in Smolda (1:50.5, 32 wins from 68 starts, $2.55 million).
Courage Under Fire's other top male performers include 2013 NZ Free-For-All winner Pembrook Benny (1:53.6, 22 wins & $907,890); 2009 NZ Derby winner Sleepy Tripp (12 wins & $779,188); 2010 Victoria Derby winner Courage To Rule (1:51.1, 19 wins & $523,451), Australasian Breeders Crown 4YO winner Dont Hold Back (p2, 1:53.7, 12 wins & $213,435); and 2011 NSW Chariots Of Fire 4YO winner & 2010 Australian Derby winner Lanercost (1:52.5, 30 wins & $509,121).
