‘COURAGE’ SONS STRING MULTIPLE WINS TOGETHER

Bromac Lodge
Published by Jeff Scott in News · 26 November 2019

Aged sons of Courage Under Fire in Kiwi Bloke (West Australia) and Torrid Bromac (North America) have hit purple patches of form in recent weeks.

Courage Under Fire, the former six-time Derby winner, has had his chilled semen book closed due to popular demand by Stallions Australasia, who leased Bromac Lodge this term.

Kiwi Bloke, bred in Canterbury by Hamish Scott, Kim Lawson and Equine Investments Ltd, has found his niche in Perth.

Bred to be above average by a top sire and from four-win mare A Good Kiwi Chick (1:58, half-sister by Falcon Seelster to top mare Kiwi Ingenuity, 1:52.1), he’s come good with time.

He won his fourth race in five WA starts (placing third off 30m in the other) at Pinjarra on Monday.

He's relishing the stand starts there for trainer, Ross Oliveri, and driver, Chris Voak.

It was just another case of making the top on Monday, getting a mid-race breather, then putting the field to the sword at the 400m mark.

Kiwi Bloke dashed away to score at a $1.60 favourite by 8.8 metres, rating 2:02.6 for the 2631m, quickening over his last 800m in 56.1s and 400m 27.6s.

He went a quicker 2:00.3 rate the previous Monday at the same venue, winning by 11.7 metres.

Kiwi Bloke, despite being forward enough to race in the NZ Kindergarten Stakes and two other starts at two for West Melton trainer Malcolm Shinn, has taken longer than expected to mature.

Shinn transferred him to young fellow West Melton trainer Johnny Morrison, who was assisting Shinn, after two 3YO starts, but it took until April this year as a late 5YO that Kiwi Bloke found how to win.

He scored back-to-back wins at Rangiora and Forbury for Morrison at his 18th and 19th starts, then had two unplaced north starts for Ray Green in late May, early June, before heading to Perth.

TORRID BROMAC WINS AGAIN IN PENNSYLVANIA

Meanwhile Torrid Bromac (7h Courage Under-Fire-Tanisa Bromac, by Live Or Die-Tanisa Vance), notched his 12th win of the year at Harrah's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Monday (NZ time).

He's been busy with 34 starts, also placing five times, for earnings of US $86,151.

Torrid Bromac has been well placed in claimers at Harrah's over the last month, changing hands several times. He was entered with a $15,000 claim price on Monday, but has remained with the Peter Pelligrino stable.

He ran as a 2-1 favourite in his latest win, taking an early trail from the ace, leading at the half-mile for driver Geo Napolitano jun, and holding by a neck in 1:54.1 (fifth), well outside his personal best of 1:50.4 (fifths).

Torrid Bromac won eight of 38 starts for $64,663, mostly for the Steven McRae stable, also racing briefly for Regan Todd and Gavin Smith, before his sale to the United States.

His career earnings have now exceeded $200,000.

Torrid Bromac’s dam Tanisa Bromac (TT, 1:58.4), was sold by Bromac Lodge last year to Halswell, Christchurch owner, Max Taylor, who raced Torrid Bromac in NZ.

Tanisa Bromac's dam Tanisa Vance, a sister to Play More (1:52.2, US), and half-sister to Grinaldi (1:57.3, 10 NZ wins), is the dam of five individual winners, including former 10-race NZ winner Ross The Boss (1:50, US), who added another 24 wins in the US for $404,654.

The family has also produced other top performers such as Tallyho Bromac (1:53.7), Kotare Jaeger (p2, 1:56.9), Habeebee (1:53.6, US), former NZ 3YO mile record holder Kotare Mach (1:53), Kotare Yael (1:50.8, US), and Tullow (1:50.4, US).
