Cruz Bromac furthered his good 6YO season by winning first-up under a restructured ownership in the $30,000 Warragul Pacing Cup on Sunday, April 1.
The strong Falcon Seelster-Crown Defender gelding justified his short $1.50 favouritism, moving up in the open and winning by 1.4 metres in a 1:58.5 rate for the mobile 2627m.
Cruz Bromac, who resumed from a year off to reduce his lifetime best mile rate to 1:50.7 when winning at Melton on January 27, was surprisingly beaten second-up into second at Melton on February 3.
Freshened again, Cruz Bromac returned to racing for the Dean Braun stable, featuring Danny and Joanna Zavitsanos among his quartet of owners.
Mr Zavitsanos has enjoyed feature successes in NZ in recent months with the Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen stable.
He is the owner of promising unbeaten 2YOs, War Dan Delight, winner of both the NZ Sapling and Kingergarten Stakes, and while Mr and Mrs Zavitsanos race 2YO trotter Enhance Your Calm, winner of last Saturday's NZ Two-Year-Old Trotting Stakes.
Cruz Bromac, now a winner of 14 from 25 career starts, is a grandson of prolific Bromac Lodge producer Classic Blue Jeans (dam of 10 individual winners, nine in 2:00).
Classic Blue Jeans had early claim to fame, leaving Attorney General (1:48.4, US, 20 wins & $434,952), formerly the fastest NZ-bred pacer.
Her other winners include Cullen Bromac (1:55.1, 20 wins), Crown Counsel (TT, 1:58.1, one), Crown Bromac (1:54.1, 15 wins), Captain Bromac (1:57.8, 15 wins), Chay Bromac (1:59.2, three), Chiquita Bromac (1:58.7, five), Mink Stride (five), Cindy Bromac (1:57.6, three) and Our Charley Bromac (one).
Cruz Bromac is from Crown Defender, an unraced Life Sign-Classic Blue Jeans mare, and the dam of four sub 1:58 winners.
Besides Cruz Bromac (p3, 1:51.6, 1:50.7; 14 wins & $190,075), she's also the dam of Carter Bromac (p3, 1:52.4, 11 wins from 27 starts), Churchill Bromac (1:57.3, 13 wins) and Coltrane Bromac (1:57.5, 8 wins).
Crown Defender is currently in foal to Courage Under Fire.
Other daughters of Classic Blue Jeans to have bred on include Crown Counsel (by Western Hanover) and Classic Art (by Artiscape).
Crown Counsel (TT, 1:58.1) is the dam of the winners of 67 races, headed by Our Cullens Crown (1:52, US), winner of 46 races (five NZ, 11 NSW, and 30 in the USA), for $490,044.
She's also the dam of Attorney Stride (1:57.5), 13 wins & $80,258, Falcon Crown (five wins & $44,876) and debut Australian 2YO winner Desirable Stride (1:58.6, mile rate, 1650m, one win from three starts).
Classic Art (by Artiscape), who time-trialed in 1:55.1 but did not win in just two starts, left only one foal, before her her death in 2010.
She is the dam of smart West Australian winner Art Connoisseur (1:58.5), winner of 14 races and $83,660,
Bromac Lodge sold a Bettor’s Delight yearling colt from Cha Cha Bromac, an unraced daughter of Art Major and Classic Blue Jeans, for $33,000 at February’s NZ Premier Yearling Sale.
They also have a grand-daughter of Classic Blue Jeans in 3YO broodmare Can Can Bromac (Falcon Seelster-Cha Cha Bromac), in foal to $3 million Somebeachsomewhere earner Captaintreacherous (1:47.1) available for private sale.
